खांदेरीचा रणसंग्राम भाग १२ – Wee are now come to the unpleasant business of Hendry Kendry. It’s an island seated in the chopps of the bay , of one mile aboute , a meare Barron rock 2 leagues from the nearest part of our Island to it and 1 1/2 leagues from the neerest. Part of the Maine unto it. The Portugeze un former times had thought of fortifining it but , diging for water made them lay downe their intentions , for the wells they made would not produce fresh salt water. Its seated soe that if we suffer any to fortfine there wee must expect noe further trade on this Island then they shall permitt without we bee at continuell charge to keep a greater fleete at sea then they can bring against us. Wee cannot but be sensible this affaire must much disturb your Honor. And it is a sufficient griefe to us not only that wee are necessitated to be at a greater charge on that expedition, but to fine wee have not that success wee did reasonably expect ; doe all wee cann , we cannot hinder wholy relefe being given to the Island , but nightly their small galvetts , 10 or 20 , pass to and from the Maine to the Island , in the dark unseen by our vessells.(खांदेरीचा रणसंग्राम भाग १२)
What they cann carry wee are sensible cannott be more then knough to supply the absolute needes of our enemies men; but there lye the evill ; if wee doe not beate them from in this summer wee shall be at a great charge to noe purpose, for in May wee must call in our fleete and their in the Raines the enemies will take all opportunitys of fare weather to transport lime. Soe that by September it may be expected he will have a strong fort and large tankes prepared to keep water; soe that it will be a hard matter to gitt him off it, whereas now if you please to order a Europe shipp or shipps to better the Island together with our small vessells. With gods blessings 3 or 4 days at further will put and end to that business and ease the Honble. Company of great charge; which wee have formerly advised and now againe humbly begg you will take into your serious considerations.
मुंबईकर सुरतेला आपल्या २६ ऑक्टोबर च्या पत्रात लिहितात :
हे खांदेरी उंदेरी बेट बंदराच्या अगदी तोंडात सुमारे १ मेल घेराचे असून मुंबई बेटापासून २ लीग व किनाऱ्यापासून दीड लीग अंतरावर आहे. पौर्तुगिजांनी आधी तिथे किल्ला बांधण्याचा प्रयत्न केला पण तिथे पाणी लागत नव्हते म्हणून तो प्रयत्न सोडून देण्यात आला. तिथे कोणालाही ठाणे करू देणे हे मुंबईच्या व्यापाराला विघातक आहे असा विचार करून आम्ही शिवाजी महाराजांना विरोध करायची तयारी केली. परंतु त्यात आम्हाला हवे तसे यश मात्र पदरी पडले नाही. रात्री अंधारातून किनाऱ्यावरून तेथे गलबत येतात आणि किल्ल्यावरील लोकांस मदत करतात. अशी मदत त्यांना पुरेशी नसली तरी हि मदत कायम सुरु आहे. तसेच एक मोठी आपत्ती अशीही आहे कि जर उन्हाळ्यात आम्ही यांचा बंदोबस्त करू शकलो नाही तर पावसात आम्ही आमची गलबते किनाऱ्यावर बोलावल्यावर मार्ग मोकळा झालेला पाहून मराठे चुना वैगरे मसाला नेऊन सप्टेंबरला किल्ला व पाण्याच्या टाक्या तयार करतील आणि आता आपण केलेली सगळी खटपट फुकट जाईल असे वाटते. या सगळ्या गोष्टींचा विचार केला तर यांना थांबवायचे असेल तर एखादे युरोपीय गलबत ३ ते ४ दिवसासाठी पाठवल्यास या प्रकरणाचा तात्काळ निकाल लागेल आणि आपल्याला हवे असलेले यश नक्कीच मिळेल अशी आशा आम्हाला आहे.
खांदेरीच प्रकरण वाढत होत तसा व्यापही वाढत होता. इंग्रजांनी याची धास्ती घेतली होती कारण मराठे माघार काही घेत नव्हतेच. इंग्रज आपल्या समर्थ शत्रूशी युद्ध करणे टाळत होते कारण त्यांना त्याच्या पुढचा धोका दिसून येत होता. पण तरीही खांदेरीवर आपल्याला हक्क मिळावा म्हणुन पूर्ण प्रयत्न चालू होते. वर वर शिवाजी महाराजांशी मित्रत्व दाखवणारे इंग्रज खांदेरीचा अधिकार मात्र मराठ्यांना देण्यासाठी तयार नव्हते. इथल्या राजकीय सत्तांसोबत विरोधाच धोरण न स्वीकारण्याचा प्रयत्न करणारे इंग्रज खांदेरीसाठी मात्र आटापिटा करत होते. मराठ्यांची युद्धनीती इंग्रजांना घातक ठरत होती.
